As I was reading Luke 24 the morning
after Easter, I was again reminded of a powerful principle needed to fully
understand the Word of God. We must have "open eyes." While two disciples
walked on the road to Emmaus "Jesus
himself drew near and went with them. But their eyes were kept from recognizing
him" (24:15). Walking toward the village, the two men spent quite some time
with Him. However, it was only after Jesus agreed to stay for a time and "broke
bread" that "their eyes were opened, and
they recognized him."(24:31). Later in Chapter 24, Jesus appeared to more
of his disciples, and they too were slow to recognize Him. He began to teach
them the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms. "Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures" (24:45).
They understood! They saw!
In 1968, as a brand new believer in the Lord Jesus Christ, I was taught to pray before I read the Bible, "Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law" (Psalm 119:18). I still pray that prayer when I approach the Word of God to read and study. We can simply read for information, for more knowledge, to fill in our questions in our CBS homework, or with our eyes wide open we can be spiritually taught by the Holy Spirit as we read the living Truth of the God-breathed Word of God. I want the Scriptures to speak life to me daily. Once we were blind, but now we see! We should be continually grateful for God's amazing grace and always pray "Open our eyes, Lord, that we may truly be transformed by every Word."
